in an arrangement by Mozart, K. 591

It was Baron van Swieten who commissioned Mozart to newly orchestrate some of Handel’s oratorios. ‘New’ primarily means here adjusting the instrumentation to the orchestra of the late 18th century and reducing the dominance of the basso continuo. In the new instrumentation Mozart transforms the work into the sound world of the Viennese Classical period.

One intermission; end at approx. 1 p.m.
